Glendale Housing Authority Approves Exclusive Negotiating Agreement for Five More Habitat for Humanity Homes

S:CAD DocumentsResidential624 GENEVA STREETrenderingsRENDER

June 9th was a day filled with excitement and anticipation for San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity and the City of Glendale!  Expressing their appreciation for and confidence in affordable housing built by the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, Glendale’s Housing Authority took unanimous action to enter into an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement (ENA) with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity to build five homes at 624-630 Geneva Street.  During the next 14 months, City and SGV Habitat for Humanity will develop the details of a Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA) that will advance the project to DDA approvals, entitlements, fundraising and groundbreaking.  Cash in the amount of $600,000 must be raised, and gifts-in-kind of building materials and pro bono services must be secured so that five more deserving, low-income families who live and/or work in Glendale will achieve the dream of homeownership.

The Geneva Homes will be the seventh development built in partnership with the Glendale Housing Authority. This will be SGV Habitat for Humanity’s first “green” build.

To date, 18 SGV Habitat homes have been completed in Glendale, and 11 more are nearing completion.  The five Geneva Homes will bring the total number of Habitat homes in Glendale to 34.  The Geneva Homes are the second high-density development SGV Habitat for Humanity will build in Glendale. City of Glendale requires that these homes be townhouse style to maximize City’s investment in the land for affordable housing. The homes will be two-story, 1250 square feet condominiums with common walls, 1 1/2 baths and a two-car garage for each home.

YOUR help is needed to raise the funds that will build the new Geneva homes.  The Geneva Campaign target is $600,000.  Ground will be broken when the benchmark amount of $400,000 has been raised, and fundraising will continue until the full cash amount is on hand to complete the homes.  Glendale’s own Elaine Wilkerson has agreed to chair the Geneva Campaign.  She shared her passion for the work of SGV Habitat for Humanity, “This seventh project in Glendale provides housing for young families that are a part of our community. I hope Glendale continues to support new housing that we can be proud of.”

“There’s no place like home,” Dorothy observed in The Wizard of Oz.  Those of us who own a safe and decent home often take it for granted.  But many children and their families, in Glendale and throughout the San Gabriel Valley, have never experienced a stable, decent place to call home.

Please click “Donate Now” on this web page to help a family, for the first time in their lives, to say, “There’s no place like home!”

It was a Day of Celebration!

San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity celebrated its growing core of dedicated volunteers at a Volunteer Recognition Reception on Sunday, May 3rd on the beautiful grounds of the home of Essy and Connie Alamdari.  There were over 150 attendees, including Temple City Mayor Judy Wong and Assemblymember Anthony Portantino.  Perfect weather and amazing food donated by Ernie Cruz of Ernie Jr.’s Taco House in Eagle Rock and St. Bede’s Catholic Church in La Canada conveyed to the volunteers how much they are appreciated.

The following “Regulars,” those who have consistently worked construction on the Kenwood build site in Glendale, were honored:  Wally Anderson, Bill Boyd, Jim Davis, Virgil Graf, Wayne Kruse, Tom Lynn, Victor Sumann, Bill Weber, Bill Wofford, and Chuck Wolski..  Each was also honored with a gift certificate at local restaurants.  Gift certificates were donated by Black Cow Cafe, Carmine’s, Dish, Il Fornaio, Minx, P.F.Chang’s, Panda Inn, Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Restaurant, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and Spitfire Saloon Restaurant all located in the San Gabriel Valley. Singers from the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and the California-Pacific United Methodist Foundation, led by Jesse L. Martin, serenaded the Regulars with their beautiful rendition of “Bless This House.”

Also honored were 22 individuals who have procured gifts-in-kind and pro-bono services for Habitat and have donated countless hours of work on construction sites and behind-the-scenes. Recipients of the Loyal Order of the Bent Nail awards were Jesus Diaz, Jim Lamdagan, Al Silliman, and Bill Sjogren.  Recipients of the Loyal Order of Helping Hands awards were Essy & Connie Alamdari, Jan Berentsen, Joan Bouchard, Susan Clarke, Don Goodman, Tony Haynes, Sr., John Ingle, Jamie Keyser, Linda Magarian, Karen Norton, Monique Poon, and Howard Woo.  Recipients of Golden Heart awards for years of faithful service and stewardship were Roger & Elizabeth Booth, Ruth Brager, Tom Doud, George Garfield, Cindy Heydt, and Janelle Williams.  Vince Quinones was honored with the Ace Cain Humanitarian Award for exemplifying the spirit of the organization’s esteemed founder by securing nearly $100,000 in pro bono gifts and services for SGV Habitat for Humanity.

The nameplates on the awards were donated by David Lazier of Nelson Nameplates, and the wooden plaques were hand-crafted by SGV Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore manager, Bill Anderson.

SGV Habitat for Humanity depends on and thrives because of individuals, businesses and churches who donate time, money and gifts-in-kind of materials or pro bono services.
