OUR SGVH COMMITTEES
WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT THEM!

Have you ever wondered, “How did they do that?” when you’ve seen a great performance?  The amazing work of building home after home, primarily through the work of volunteers, creates that same kind of awe!  We could not accomplish our goal of building 4-7 affordable Habitat homes each year without the behind-the-scenes efforts of our dedicated committee members.  Here are brief summaries of the thrust and duties of each committee.  Would you like to get involved as a committee member?  If so, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteernow.com.

Fund Development Committee – John MacLean, Chair
Responsible for developing annual fundraising and implementing plans to support the short and long term construction and operational budgets.  This committee is subdivided into the following areas: Fund Raisers, Individual Giving, Corporate Giving, Adopt-A-House and Grant Writing.  Our annual gala event, Rock the House has its own sub-committee members as does the Grant Writing group which is headed by Emily Stork.  Currently we are working on our Kenwood 11 x 11 project to raise $1.1 million by the end of 2006.

Public Relations Committee – Deane Winant , Chair
Responsible for community relations, including events with schools and community organizations . This committee develops and maintains a Speaker's Bureau, arranges for speaking engagements, publishes a quarterly newsletter. Also responsible for organizing and coordinating Special Events, such as groundbreaking and house dedication ceremonies.  Volunteer Mike Schutz will schedule your service club, church group, or your work group for a SGVH PowerPoint presentation.

Faith Relations Committee – Larry Gunn, Chair
Acts as liaison with all local places of worship and promotes regular contact with them. Organizes Alternative Gift Fairs with local churches. Forms covenant church relationships with local churches. Overall goal is to facilitate church involvement in special activities and potential church sponsorship of houses.   Larry and his committee are one of the 11 x 11 teams for Kenwood.  Please get your place of worship involved!  Becca Trost, Faith Relations Coordinator supports the work of this committee.

Construction Committee – Lou Robinson, Chair
This committee is subdivided to cover three areas: materials coordination, construction management, and maintenance. The committee ensures that our homes get built according to plan in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  Knowledge of various aspects of home construction is helpful.  The committee coordinates procurement of Gifts-in-Kind (construction materials and services) donations.  After completion of the houses, the committee follows up on maintenance issues during the warranty period.

Site Development Committee – George Garfield, Chair
Responsible for securing land and ensuring its preparation for our building projects. Areas of responsibility include land acquisition, negotiations/interface with City officials/staff for financial support. In addition, the committee coordinates the procurement of construction plans (grading, house, landscape), entitlements (variances, parcel/tract maps), and building permits.

Family Committee – Clay Callendar and Sarah Brunkow, Co-chairs
The committee is comprised of  two sections:

  1. The Family Selection Committee develops applications, participates in marketing efforts for each project, screens and recommends new homeowner families to the Board of Directors.

  2. The Family Partnership Committee provides the selected homeowner families with support and friendship. Also offered are forums for discussion and education on becoming a first-time home-owner, budgeting, home maintenence, home owners associations, health education and other relevant topics.

Finance Committee – Howard Woo, Chair
Responsible for coordinating preparation of the budget, establishing appropriate cost control measures (including periodic income and expenditure reports), and overseeing the Affiliate’s investments.  This committee also recommends home pricing guidelines to the Board of Directors.

Volunteer Committee –Deane Winant, Chair
Responsible for recruitment and management of volunteers.  The significant areas of responsibility are hospitality at the building site and office, volunteer orientations, volunteer training, recruitment and retention. This committee needs creative, communicative people with experience in working with or managing large numbers of people.  The Hospitality Committee has the privilege of welcoming volunteers to our current work site(s) and also helps to plan recognition events for volunteers.  Jan Robinson, Volunteer Coordinator, supports the work of this committee.

Builders Surplus Store Committee – Tom Doud, Chair
Responsible for making our Builders Surplus Store profitable.  Committee members provide leads for recruiting volunteer workers in the BSS, contacts for sufficient inventory, guidance in pricing structures, and leadership for effective retailing.
