Sherman Build-Monrovia
This is Habitat’s first build in Monrovia. There has been enthusiasm from local residents and the Monrovia City Council which provided the land for these homes.
Major gifts have been received through a Charitable Remainder Trust from Dorothy Read,The Walt Disney Company, the Board of Directors, Downey Savings and Loan, Cal National Bank of Monrovia, Samuelson & Fetter and over two hundred individual donors.
“We give special thanks to Councilmember Mary Ann Lutz, Donna Baker, Charlotte Hogan and Sonja Yates who planted the seeds to make this development happen,” said Ann Dougherty, Sherman Campaign Chair.
Four teams were formed to focus on particular fund development groups. The Faith Build is headed by Howard Woo and is seeking support from the faith community. Daric Lee and Deborah Loveland, who both come from a banking background, are giving leadership to the Financial Build and are approaching financial institutions and auditing firms. Donna Baker, a Monrovia realtor and long time supporter of Habitat, spearheads the Women’s Build. Donna has recruited 50 women to contribute and build.
Mike Davitt and Don Goodman head the Construction/Business Build. They are seeking monetary donations, pro bono services and in-kind materials to reduce building costs.
Kenwood Homes—Glendale
The 11-home Kenwood condominium development at 711-717 N. Kenwood is the most sophisticated urban development to be undertaken by our affiliate. Each home has a two-car semi-subterranean garage, and the three-bedroom, 1 ½-bath units rise two stories above the garages.
Before entering into a Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA) with the Glendale Housing Authority and the Department of Housing and Community Development, SGV Habitat for Humanity was required to raise $1.1 million. A successful fundraising campaign in 2006 allowed the affiliate to move ahead with construction, and ground was broken for the new homes on October 8, 2007
For the first time in our affiliate’s 18-year history, we have the opportunity to build homes with and for two families who have profoundly handicapped sons. By coincidence, both of these boys, one age 14 and the other age three, have hydrocephalus. These children are in wheelchairs and require a lift or elevator to get them to the second level of their new homes where the bedrooms are. We have made alterations to the building plans for these two units at Kenwood so a handicapped accessible lift or elevator can be installed from the ground level to the second floor in addition to the lift from the semi-subterranean garages to ground level. This has added expenses of $62,000 which were not known during the Kenwood Campaign. If you would like to make a contribution to help us offset these additional costs, please donate on-line or contact Sayaka Ota at SGV Habitat, 626-792-3838 x14, and designate your gift for the Kenwood handicapped accessible lifts.
Completion of the Kenwood Homes brings our affiliate to the significant 50-home production benchmark!
