How can someone get started? Each young person should discuss with an adult sponsor which activities they wish to perform (click here for a list of activities). For some tasks the adult/young person pair or group will need to make prior arrangements (this is noted with an asterisk on the activities list) with the Habitat staff. Please note that not all tasks are available all the time.
Do adults need to go along with the youth when they come to Habitat? Yes, we require 1:1 ratio for adult to 16-year-olds (and younger) and a 1:5 ratio for adult to 17-year-olds. We are very interested in keeping kids safe and utilizing their time effectively and would like to have Habitat be an activity where adults and youth can work side by side.
Can youth help at the Habitat ReStores? While we typically only schedule volunteers over the age of 18 to help at the ReStore, but we can make exceptions on an individual basis.
What if I have a different idea of what to do? Great! Just discuss it with the Youth Programs Coordinator.
Can the young person use this for community service for school or service clubs? Yes, as long as the form has been filled out and the hours verified by the adult sponsor. Those with court-ordered community service need to contact Habitat directly to discuss more detailed requirements.
How can I post my art on SGV Habitat’s website? We plan to post youth’s art (painting, drawings, writing) on our website. We hope to keep eash person’s art work there for at least 3 months. We will only identify the person by first name and last initial to protect their privacy.
